Although
the Proform 540 treadmill is built by a powerhouse in the fitness
machine industry, Proform's models tend to stack up low to average against the
competition. This model is no exception, receiving poor marks for
quality, but good marks for cushioning and price. The Proform 540 is a little
more affordable than many other treadmills on the market, however, considering
what goes right with the models it could be a good entry-level machine for
someone on a budget.
Manufactured by Icon, the Proform 540 treadmill is just one in
a large line of machines. Overall existing models have not stacked up well
against the competition. Icon is the maker of such lines of fitness equipment as
NordicTrack, Image and Weslo. The company has about 4,000 employees in 11
locations around the world and does carry a 25-year plus track record so
purchasers don’t have to worry about a fly-by-night operation.
The Proform 540 offers a 2.75 horsepower motor, a power
incline control, a cooling fan for the workout and seven built-in treadmill
workouts. It can handle speeds of 0 to 10 miles per hour, does an incline of 0
to 10 percent, comes with deck cushioning and offers a belt size of 18-by-55
inches. This treadmill also offers a heart rate monitor, a quick speed control
and many other bells and whistles for the $600 price tag. The biggest pluses on
the 540 model are the
300-pound weight capacity and the increase in Proform’s standard three-year
motor warranty to a 10-year protection plan.

Unlike many of the company’s other models, the Proform 540
does not come with the standard Proform warranty which is billed as the
3-2-1 Tread Warranty. This new treadmill model seems to offer a marked improvement over
previous offerings by increasing its coverage on the motor.
While the warranty has been increased, professionals still say
the Proform 540 treadmill has some draw backs that include cheap parts and a small walking
surface. However, this model is relatively new in the line and only the test of
time will show if it measures up better than other Proform offerings in the
past.
